Cisco also acknowledged MillenniumIT's commitment to provide high-quality customer support: Dishan Gamage, one of the company's senior engineers specialising in Next-generation Networks (NGNs), was bestowed with a “Roll of Honour” award, citing his ‘untiring efforts' in supporting Sri Lanka's telecommunication service provider customer solutions, based on Cisco technologies and products. “Supporting Service Providers is very challenging” said Vajira Wijesinghe, Head of Technology and Networking Solutions Business at Millennium IT. “Thousands of customers rely on their Service Providers' network to run their business and any downtime puts a lot of pressure on the Service Providers. To keep these networks up and running you need highly skilled engineers who can respond quickly and effectively to solve a problem. Dishan is one of our top engineers and I am very proud he has been singled out for this recognition”. In addition, for the third year running, MillenniumIT®, Cisco's only Premier Select Partner in Sri Lanka, won the “Best Cisco Partner in Sri Lanka” award. MillenniumIT® has helped Sri Lanka Telecom, MTT Networks and Suntel three of Sri Lanka's largest telecom operators (or Service Providers, as they are known today, since they provide more than just telephony services) to deploy such networks. “In the past few years there has been a significant fall in revenues from plain old telephony services” said Damith. “With converged networks in place, Service Providers are able to offer a range of new solutions that have helped them to offset revenue losses and grow their business substantially”. Some of the services rolled out by Service Providers include IP VPN (to connect countrywide, and global branch networks of large enterprises), Voice over IP (for low-cost international and local telephony) and Broadband ADSL (for high-speed internet connectivity). “The next wave of services will be very exciting” said Damith. “One such service will be entertainment. Very soon consumers will have their favourite TV programs and movies delivered to them over their phone lines. In fact we did a successful trial of these services for SLT some months.
