Millennium All-Island Robot Competition (MARC) was organised on the 1st of November 2006,to commemorate MillenniumIT’s 10th anniversary. The main objective of this competition was to promote an IT culture among schools and professionals of all disciplines.
MARC involved programming a virtual robot, to traverse a stimulated environment, pick up packages and safely return to its starting position before the stipulated time ran out. The event was aimed at determining the participants’ programming skills in working their way around complex situations.
The competition was conducted under two age categories: Under 19 and Open. Interestingly, MARC didn’t impose any restrictions for entry, based on the participants’ educational qualifications or occupation. Anyone with a knack for programming could participate. The competitors used many of the popular programming languages to code the robot (C, C++, VB, Java, .NET).
Over 500 entries were received. Batch runs of the participants programs were conducted every week in order to create a competitive atmosphere among the contenders and also to give them an opportunity to determine their chances of winning the competition. The finals took place at the MillenniumIT auditorium.
The competition had the approval of the Ministry of Education and was endorsed by the Information and Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA)
