MillenniumIT® continues undergraduate scholarship programme for the third consecutive year

February 15, 2006

Millennium Information Technologies (MillenniumIT®) will be continuing with its scholarship programme for undergraduates in the faculty of engineering of the University of Moratuwa, for the third consecutive year in 2006, the company announced recently.

"We strongly believe that with the implementation of our projects globally, MillenniumIT® is helping Sri Lanka to reclaim her heritage - that of being a land of engineers. In the yesteryear we excelled in civil and mechanical engineering. Now our young engineers have proven that they can build software systems that can out perform those produced any where in the world. It is this vision for Sri Lanka that led to the initiation of the scholarship programme between MillenniumIT® and University of Moratuwa. We felt the need to provide much needed encouragement for the students so that they could be what they have the potential of being. Given that majority of our engineers are from the University of Moratuwa, it seemed appropriate to initiate this venture at Moratuwa" the Head of Human Resources at MillenniumIT®, Ms. Samanthie Gunasekara stated.

The scholarships are granted to students studying in the third year of the Faculty of Engineering. Both the academic performance of the students during the past two years as well as their requirement for financial aid are taken in to account when the scholarships are awarded to a student. During the past two years we have awarded scholarships to six students. This year we intend to award a further five scholarships, she added.

Besides a financial grant provided for personal expenses, the students receive many other benefits by being part of the MillenniunIT Undergraduate Scholarship Programme. The students are invited to do their final year projects with MillenniumIT® and all required material for the projects are bought and provided free of charge by the Company. While conducting their projects, the students will be part of MillenniumIT® and will receive all benefits enjoyed by regular staff members. The students after their graduation, though not compelled to, are also encouraged to join the MillenniumIT® team, thus guaranteeing them employment.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa Prof. Malik Ranasinghe, commenting on the scholarship programme said that he appreciates MillenniumIT® coming forward and carrying out a worthy project of this nature, and thanked the Company for working closely with the University of Moratuwa not only in this instance but also by providing feedback to the university as well as its undergraduates on the specific requirements of the ever changing IT industry. This, he added, has helped the University to produce graduates who not only have knowledge but are also capable of meeting the challenges of the industry following their graduation.
