For their project, the Eagles chose to partner with E.A.S.E Foundation (Educate, Advocate, Support and Empower), a charity founded by Anoja and Chandima Rajapatirana to support those diagnosed as autistic. The project focused on funding the development of a video to raise community awareness of social challenges faced by people with disabilities and their families.
Social Entrepreneur Programme (SEP)
Innovation is power applies not only to our work at MillenniumIT, but also to corporate responsibility. SEP is a programme designed with multiple aims. It provides our staff with opportunities to engage with communities while developing their skills in project conceptualization, design, documentation, fundraising, teamwork and leadership. SEP was launched in 2012.
SEP is part of the MiClub Activities. As such the five houses – Eagles, Lions, Scorpions, Lycans and Sharks each initiated their own projects, raised their own funds and competed with each other. In keeping with the aims of SEP, we looked for the house with the best project, best fund raising initiative, best documentary and the house that raised the most funds.
Partnering with the Seva Vanitha Unit of the Sri Lanka Army, the Sharks provided a group of disabled ex-soldiers with Juki sewing machines, a soldier who wishes to participate in the Paralympics with sports equipment and provided ten houses at Abhimansala (Brave Hearts Wellness Resort) with ceiling fans and exhaust fans.
The Scorpions chose to establish a computer lab at a community centre at Athidiya with the aim of enhancing IT literacy amongst those who are economically disadvantaged.
Knowledge of English is essential for success in today’s society. However, children in most rural schools face a disadvantage in learning English due to lack of trained teachers and resources. The Lycans sought to bridge this gap in a school in Galewela. In partnership with CandleAid Sri Lanka, the Lycans sponsored the establishment of an English resource centre at St. Anthony’s Central Secondary School atWasalakotte, Galewala.
The Lions commitment to social entrepreneurship was to improve the library and set up acomputer lab at Parakrama Children’s Home, Kandana. To ensure sustainability of the project, the Lions also provided basic training on computer maintenance to the care givers atthis facility.
October 7, 2012 saw the first-ever MillenniumITcharity walk.More than a hundred staff members, their families and representatives from the charities we supports took part, walking from Galle Face Green to the MillenniumIT’s Colombo office.
