For their project, the Eagles chose to partner with E.A.S.E Foundation (Educate, Advocate, Support and Empower), a charity founded by Anoja and Chandima Rajapatirana to support those diagnosed as autistic. The project focused on funding the development of a video to raise community awareness of social challenges faced by people with disabilities and their families.
Partnering with the Seva Vanitha Unit of the Sri Lanka Army, the Sharks provided a group of disabled ex-soldiers with Juki sewing machines, a soldier who wishes to participate in the Paralympics with sports equipment and provided ten houses at Abhimansala (Brave Hearts Wellness Resort) with ceiling fans and exhaust fans.
The Scorpions chose to establish a computer lab at a community centre at Athidiya with the aim of enhancing IT literacy amongst those who are economically disadvantaged.
Knowledge of English is essential for success in today’s society. However, children in most rural schools face a disadvantage in learning English due to lack of trained teachers and resources. The Lycans sought to bridge this gap in a school in Galewela.In partnership with CandleAid Sri Lanka, the Lycans sponsored the establishment of an English resource centre at St. Anthony’s Central Secondary School atWasalakotte, Galewala.
The Lions commitment to social entrepreneurship was to improve the library and set up acomputer lab at Parakrama Children’s Home, Kandana.To ensure sustainability of the project, the Lions also provided basic training on computer maintenance to the care givers atthis facility.
October 7, 2012 saw the first-ever MillenniumITcharity walk.More than a hundred staff members,their families and representatives from the charities we supports took part, walking from Galle Face Green to the MillenniumIT’s Colombo office.
A group of Millennium staff conducted a voluntary workshop on information technology for Ordinary and Advanced Level students at a rural school in February 2012, helping improve their general knowledge, life skills and employability. The workshop was held at Udawela Central Secondary School near Hasalaka, a rural town in the economically disadvantaged Mahiyanganaya district.
In partnership with London Stock Exchange Group Foundation (LSEGF) and Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka, MillenniumIT began building houses for internally displaced people in the North and East of the country.By January 2013, we completed the construction of 54 houses in Sinnathammunai, Vakarai and 51 houses as well a community centre in Muthiyankattikulam, Oddusudan.Currently, we are renovating and building 261 houses in Sinnathammunai.
E.A.S.E Foundation provides training in Facilitated Communications for people with speech impairments and works to help change society’s attitudes towards those with disabilities.
The video is aimed at raisingpublic awareness to celebrate diversity by accepting everyone, including those with disabilities, as equal members of society.
